Modeling the Jesuit way of proceeding—experience, reflection, and action—Margins students, after 6 months of preparation, spent spring break in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Upon returning, students reflected on the impact of the immersions on their own lives. Today, students presented their social action plans to students, and faculty and staff in a science-fair-styled event in the library.
Los Angeles
The Los Angeles immersion focuses on criminal justice. These photos show moments of service preparing and serving food at Midnight Mission on Skid Row and Guadalupe Homeless Project at Dolores Mission as well as packing food boxes for families at St. Francis Center. They heard personal testimonies from several awesome and inspirational speakers: Kevin Lewandowski who spoke of his journey from Catholic education to the business world to being homeless on the streets and now doing outreach for current homeless populations; several people at the Anti-Recidivism Coalition spoke about their experience as formerly incarcerated individuals who were given second chances and now help people navigate society and responsibilities when they are released from prison; Homeboy Industries "homies" who spoke about finding their way to Homeboy Industries and out of gang life after struggles in their younger years that led them to gang life and incarceration. The group also had some fun visiting some of LA’s must-see places including a Dodgers Game, Griffith Observatory, the Santa Monica Pier, and Manhattan Beach.
New Orleans
The New Orleans immersion focuses on socio-economic justice. These pictures capture the learning and fun that the Margins NOLA experienced: They caught produce and fun goods at the Italian American Parade, explored the French Quarter, ate at a crawfish boil, toured Loyola New Orleans, built houses in the Lower 9th Ward with the Saint Bernard Project, learned about the history of New Orleans and about Adrian's experience with Hurricane Katrina, met Steve Gleason, and prayed before their final dinner together. They also learned from Emily at the Harry Thompson Center, a day shelter for the unhoused of New Orleans.
San Francisco
The San Francisco immersion focuses on environmental justice. This selection of photos includes visits to Shuggie's Food Waste Paradise, Canticle Farms, Sunnyvale Smart Station recycling center, using BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, and the beach.
