Watkins Scholars Program

watkinsNamed in honor of Rev. Happy Watkins, the Watkins Scholars Program gives aspiring students access to a challenging college preparatory education in a supportive environment, opening doors after high school and helping them grow into confident, capable leaders.

Happy

The late Rev. Percy “Happy” Watkins was a beloved member of the Gonzaga Prep and the greater Spokane community. The longtime pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, Rev. Watkins was a moral voice, mentor, and advocate for justice. He served on Gonzaga Prep’s school board and two of his grandsons are Prep alumni. He believed that every deserving student should have the opportunity to be transformed by a Gonzaga Prep education

Program Overview

The Watkins Scholarship offers up to $15,000 annually for twenty-five qualified students, renewable for all four years. This scholarship includes far more than tuition—it provides access to a comprehensive program designed to support students and their families for success at Gonzaga Prep and beyond.

Eligibility & Selection

This competitive scholarship is open to students who:
  • Represent the first generation in their families to attend college, or who would strongly benefit from a program designed to meet the needs of first generation students.
  • Demonstrate strong financial need. Partial scholarships are available to families who may not qualify for the full award.
  • Show how access to a highly intentional and supportive college-prep process will help them achieve their personal goals and make a commitment to the program for four years.

All applicants must first APPLY FOR ADMISSION to Gonzaga Prep. They will then participate in an evening interview event designed to assess their readiness and commitment to the program. Activities during the selection process will evaluate interpersonal skills, openness to growth, and eagerness to embrace the program’s high expectations.
